Frontex is
the common name for the European Agency
for the Management of Operational Coordination at the External
Frontiers of the Member States of the European Union. The term Frontex
derives from the French for external borders, frontières
extérieures.
The agency's work is based around improving and strengthening border
security systems at the land and sea borders of the European Union. In
the words of the agency itself, "the activities of Frontex are
intelligence driven. Frontex complements and provides particular added
value to the national border management systems of the Member States."
The purpose of this observatory is to analyse and
document the role and activities of Frontex. It is divided into six
